About a month ago, W+K came out with a new ad campaign for Old Spice body wash for MEN(seen below) with Isaiah Mustafa encouraging WOMEN to make their 'man' to smell like a 'man'. This ad went viral and soon everyone [atleast all the ladies! ;)] was talking about it. It was a hit!!
For Fb: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owGykVbfgUE
Then Old Spice rode the wave like never before. They claimed that if Twitter users used '@oldspice' in their tweets and sent them a request, they would make personalized ads starring Isaiah Mustafa. AND they did!! They fulfilled most requests and uploaded them on youtube as replies within 1 or 2 days!!!! The videos surpassed 110 million views and passed the reach of even traditional broadcast. Way to use the online media to the MAX!!
A very famous example is seen below wherein a user JsBeals had asked oldspice to help him by posting a marriage proposal on youtube asking Jsbeal's gf to marry marry Jsbeals.
For Fb: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-fLV28SkZ8
Just imagine the costs incurred and how hard the agency must have been working while churning out these videos every hour, every day! Phew!
But nothing like 'ol SALES. The sales for Old Spice increased by 107% after this YouTube Campaign...Woah!!! Im sure, noone is complaining about any costs now..are they!! PURE GENIUS!!!!!!
Never have I seen such excitement created around something as simple as bodywash, keeping it up and then ending it successfully while at peak. They finished the campaign recently...but WOW...what a finish!!! I LOVED their campaign. It was a job superbly done and well executed!
A very similar ad was done for Wild Stone Talc asking men to smell like men (seen below) but nothing like Old Spice! Although, this is a good effort, wish they had taken this further to create more buzz around WildStone. It came and is forgotten already!

I miss u home!
It feels good to be home. This is my comfort zone, my sanctuary, my abode, my safe-zone...my everything! Here I am not bothered with washing dishes, making my lunch or dinner...forget breakfast, rotting potatoes..or any vegetable for that matter, cleaning the floor, buying milk...chores that seem endless. This is my escape from all those things. I get to enjoy myself by being a couch potato...all bloody day!!! Nothing is more fun after a loooong, hard week!!!
I truly, truly miss you my dear...my lovey dovey home! :)

Kanak, The Sun Tzu of India?
We hear so much about Sun Tzu's The Art of War. It talks about the art of fighting a war based of the strategies adopted by attackers and defenders. The Art of War helps us the-so-called marketing students take home some key learnings, learning which will help us become good (great?) marketing managers. Becoz business means war! And to fight a good war, you need strategies. I had never heard of any Indian book talk about strategies when so many great wars have been fought on Indian soil and won. Never did I hear talk about adopting the different formations like the ones used on Kurukshetra in real life situations in business.
By a stroke of luck, in the book I am currently reading called 'Mrityunjaya-The Death Conqueror' came across this one and a half page dialogue between Kanak, a trusted minister of Duryodhana, King Dhritarashtra and Duryodhana. King Dhritarashtra asks Kanak to lay down the percepts written in his book called 'The Code of Kanak', explaining what a King needs to do in order to maintain his kingdom and if need be, defend it. He has not given actual strategic positions used in war but nonetheless marvelous ideas are shared. I thought this information is too good to be kept closed up in a book. Everybody should get to read it, so that maybe we can learn something and apply it to marketing or to life in general. So here it is..
" Kanak says, "Maharaja, a man should always stand firm by his own efforts. The world fears only those who are unshakably strong. That is why all deeds have to be performed from a position of strength alone.
Never let anyone in on the weaknesses of your kingdom - let this be your main aim. Every enemy will exploit your weakness. Discover your enemy's weakness, use it to your advantage, and attack first; or else you will repent.
Draw your limbs in like a tortoise and warily extend your neck to know the lay of the land.
Never criticize uselessly. Never expose your true nature to anyone, certainly not to any official employed by you.
Prefer to keep your eyes closed if that is called for, and open them only when they have the power to destroy the world. Ears, eyes and mouth - these are in your control - so don't indulge them excessively. And remember that one's hands are also one's senses. These hands have been given to us by nature so that, whenever required, we use them to cover eyes, ears and mouth.
Even if an enemy is feeble, don't underestimate him. The Palmyra is a small plant, but in no time at all it shoots straight up to the sky. The nutmeg fruit never grows on a castor-oil plant. A spark is infinitesimal but it can create a conflagration. If you spare a baby snake, don't think it will forget to sting when it grows up. No matter how weak and small an enemy is, he can exact a heavy toll in the end. Even if such an enemy professes gentle humility for any reason, dont be taken in by his crocodile tears. Dispatch instantly to the realm of Yama any impassioned enemy out to do mischief. Conciliation, winning over by gifts, punishment, intrigue- use any means to finsih off an enemy. An enemy is like the wild pandanus - a tough and hardy plant. Even if you uproot it and throw it on a plot of barren land, it will somehow succeed in re-rooting itself. Its vicious thorns on both sides regain their sharpness.
That is why one should always smile even when angry, and talk sweetly - but always do what one wants to do.
Never speak insultingly to anyone. Speak sweetly to an enemy before attacking him, and even more sweetly after attacking.
Never allow beggars and traitors to flourish in your kingdom. Beggars encourage laziness, and traitors pass on important official secrets to enemies and foment disaffection.
Learn to suspect even those who you should not suspect; test them, and never let any free who are found wanting, for they are like fierce snakes lurking in cattlegrounds.
See that spies are located in your kingdom and your enemy's kingdom. It is not enough to have an espionage system, it is necessary for the king to become a spy himself and see that it is working. The spies planted in other kingdoms should be atheists, unmarried and liars. Such spies do not betray their country out of fear of divine punishment or because they are emotionally attached to their families.
No one should know the whole truth about your kingdom.
If after a peace treaty with an enemy, a person becomes smugly self satisfied, consider him to be a man sleeping atop a tall tree. Only when he falls off, his eyes open or not open at all. The reason is that a treaty is never a total victory. A treaty is simply an acknowledgment in writing that a compromise has been made. Therefore, rather than signing to such a compromise, it is better to defeat an enemy when he is at a certain disadvantage, whether depletion of food, geographical circumstances, his morale etc. If such conditions are not available, they should be created in order to rout him.
A raja should always keep these life's objectives in mind and act in accordance to them. If for any reason he is unable to do so, then he should transfer his royal authority to the hands of a competent and dutiful regent and proceed to his renunciation stage of his life. A raja's life is not intended to spent only in relishing exquisite cuisine, strutting about in flamboyant zari dresses and roaming in the royal chariot with a golden crown adorning his head. For a raja, and for the kingdom, peasants who grow rich harvest by the sweat of their brow in the sun-scorched fields are not felons meant for forced labor. The soldiers who fearlessly risk their lives for the defense of their country and the enhancement of its glory, like the silk cotton plant scattering its wealth, are surely not madmen. The red richness of their blood gives a shining magnificence to the nation; their flesh is the fertilizer of the national tree, whose delicious fruits are relished by king and subjects alike. What kind of raja is he, and what kind of kingdom is he ruling, who cannot be loyal to such sweat and such blood?""

All i need
Murphy's law does exist. Things always go wrong. The key is to keep going, going until its gone.I heard this song recently, and since then, its become a sort of an anthem for me. Summarizes how I feel. Things have happened and nothing good has come out of it. I really just want to keep my life simple and sane...just air and sleep will do for now.
"Say (All I Need)"
Do you know where your heart is?
Do you think you can find it?
Or did you trade it for something
Somewhere better just to have it?
Do you know where your love is?
Do you think that you lost it?
You felt it so strong, but
Nothing's turned out how you wanted
Well, bless my soul
You're a lonely soul
Cause you won't let go
Of anything you hold
Well, all I need
Is the air I breathe
And a place to rest
My head
Do you know what your fate is?
And are you trying to shake it?
You're doing your best and
Your best look
You're praying that you make it
Well, bless my soul
You're a lonely soul
Cause you won't let go
Of anything you hold
Well, all I need
Is the air I breathe
And a place to rest
My head
I said I all I need
Is the air I breathe
And a place to rest
My head
Do you think you can find it?
Do you think you can find it?
Do you think you can find it?
Better than you had it
Do you think you can find it?
Do you think you can find it?

Yeah, better than you had it (Better than you had it)
I said I all I need
Is the air I breathe
And a place to rest

Do you think you can see it?
Well, until you get there
Go on, go ahead and scream it
Just say it

Exam time
When I was young, my parents would try to bribe me with stuff to get me to do well but they understood later on that a "prize" in return of good grades did not interest me. I dont want to prove to anyone how good i am. Whatever I do, I do it for myself and no1 else. I love exams. Yes! its weird....but I do. I love competition. I believe it brings out the best in me. Exams which are actually testing intelligence, understanding and application of theories, I am up for it anytime!
But Im surprised that MBA exams here are a test of memorization. The "toppers" are ppl who are good at memorizing. Well, good for them! They have the power of reproducing things without innovation. Yay! :I
Well, I dont like to memorize stuff just coz. I want to understand. If I have understood then I dont need to memorize. I am in the MBA program to learn, if i have learned and understood but cant reproduce it in a paper in the same bulleted list the professor wrote it, its fine by me!

7 days a week timetable
No, its not a joke.
We officially have a 7 days a week timetable from now on until our finals in the end of April. We have classes from 9 in the morning until 8.30 in the evening, most days. If its not scheduled lectures then its extra lectures. All the professors want to finish their syllabus way before the semester ends so that they wont have to rush through it in the end. Caught in the middle of this, are us, the poor students. How much can we take? No normal human on this planet, can sit on a hard chair from 9-8.30 listening to people talk, taking notes, asking questions, not looking dazed and that too with only 15 min to 1/2 hr breaks between lectures aaaaanndd do this 7 days a week? Arent we humans? Dont we need to rest? Maybe read up on what we learnt?
Hmmm! Like they tell us...maaaybe its a good thing, maaaaybe this is what MBA is all about but I fail to see how being physically and mentally exhausted helps us. How will we be able to grasp everything and isnt that the motive as an MBA student?

Moved in..Day one!
Note: This blog should be backdated to 17th August 2008.
So! I am all moved in at the new apartment. Its great. Tv..check, DVDs...check, geyser..check, gas..check, clothes..check, me...check?! I was there but not there. I was looking out of the window and wondering how this was going to turn out. After everything was set up, my family were going back home and I wanted to go with them :( I missed them already! How was I going to live without them. Yes, I have lived away from home before but that knowledge doesnt make it any easier. I love them mucho and will miss them terribly when I come home to an empty apartment. Ahh and yes! another reason that I want to be back home is because my doggie just gave birth (on 11th aug) to 4 puppies (2 black and 2 white) and Oooooooooo! are they cute!!!!! It will be a week tomorrow and they havent even opened their eyes. I wanted to be there when they do! Now I dont think I will be though :( But one consolation I do have is that I can meet them whenever I feel like it and its only a matter of few hours.
The home looks broken into....it looks cozy and inviting. Is it? We'll have to live and find out.

Home sweet home
There is God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!In the search for places, I hit Diamond (or watever that is better than gold coz there are some arguments that diamond isnt better than gold becoz gold appreciates in value and u can melt it...blah blah....)!!!!
After dragging my parents with me to see places and seeing homes that were horrible, I thought I would never find a place that I would like and that I would regretfully (or so it would seem) pack my bags and go to NYU but then...like magic and a wait until 6pm in the evening to see a place, the broker showed us this place. Ahhhhhh! I felt at home at once...I wanted to hit the broker on his head and ask him why he didnt show this first...dummy! But! no harm done...better late than never! :)
Cost of
renting the place: Rs. XX
moving to the place: Rs. YY
View (yes! view!) from the place: PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!
That place has a stunning view the world!!!!!!!!!!!! I will wake up to a view, make tea to a view and watch TV to a view! Amazing!!!!! Me so happpyyyyy!!!!

Chawl anyone?
So...you would think that all is set and that I am looking forward to school starting. Hmmm...WRONG! I am NOT all set and am definitely NOT looking forward to traveling in the train every morning from home all the way to my college....aahhhh! I will go insane. Looking for a place nearby college is driving me nuts...ppl are showing me homes that look like chawls...if something looks like a chawl..its definitely a chawl, people! Dammnit!!!! I dont understand why getting a decent place is such a chore. I've already laid down my specs (very realistic) for an apartment, all the broker has to do is see if it matches...but nooooooo....they will show me sh** and expect me to "chala lenge na"!!!! Argggghhhhh!!!!
Well, hopefully before college starts this monday, I will atleast find a place in which I dont feel neighboring eyes boring down on me and watching my every move. I truly hope finding a place gets easier by the day and that I will definitely hit GOLD!!!!!!! No? wat abt silver??? :/

Que Sera Sera
Ok...so I've decided that I shud stay in India and get an MBA rather than go to NYU for MS. You might ask, reasons?? So that I can be closer to my family and an MBA is better than a MS...ppl vary on this opinion but with my background MBA will help me diversify.
It breaks my heart to decide against NYU but I have to think of what is ahead of me with an MS. First, I have to grow a money tree in my backyard, shake it every few weeks just to survive in the 'Most expensive city in the US'. Secondly, spend countless hours in laboratory, only to end up getting an measly 'assistant to the assistant researcher' job in a laboratory.....hmmm...!! Why did I apply then? I had applied for a PhD program but was offered MS. PhD, I was ready to do....yes, firstly it would have been "on the house" and yes..again countless hours in the laboratory but atleast I would start at a good position when I apply for a job and not to forget the respect that comes with it.
So if I do go for the MS, I can either go for a PhD later (for which I dont think I have the patience for) or I can go for an MBA to better my qualifications. But ohhh lookie lookie!! I am getting into an MBA now without the two (or so) year wait....so why struggle for the next few years, getting an MS and then work to get into a MBA.....I will go into it now...head on!!!!!!! so MBA...here I come.
And so......now on, I have decided to leave it to destiny...... "Que sera sera!!!"
P.S. I was being selfish in this blog...it was more for me than you...helped me get my thoughts straight, you see! :D

Today's fortune: The heart is wiser than the intellect
This is my fortune for today on my orkut profile. Well, is it really???? When I have made decisions "listening" to my heart rather than using my head, I have always ended up on my a$$! And how is this a fortune anyways?? This is what you might find if you google 'quotations+to feel not so regretful'.
I think my fortune would have been more like 'you will do nothing today, nothing significant will come your way and you are going to meet NOONE special tonite!'.
Well, I do have to decide between staying in India and going back to the US. Oooo! Is this a hint as to what I shud do?!?!! If so, shouldnt it have said 'Orkut fortune is wiser than you heart AND your intellect'. Hmmm, maybe Im reading too much into this. But I still have to decide though, dont know who to listen to....my heart or my intellect???

"Floppers"
© Universal Press Syndicate
I am a fan of Calvin and Hobbes. I came across this strip from http://progressiveboink.com/archive/calvinhobbes.htm
in which are listed the 'Top 25 Great Calvin and Hobbes Strips'. (I hope I have covered all copyright issues, lets c, referenced the source and everything, hehe)
This one is possibly one of my favorites. Calvin points out the faults in the education system so easily that it boggles your mind. After reading this strip I remember the story Mumbai Mirror had published where in they tested the GK of HSC toppers and they did really bad on it.
Check out mumbaimirror.com June 13th epaper for the story titled 'Floppers'...
Most scholars (please note I have written most, if you are a scholar in studies and also in other things, Im happy for you) in India are good at memorizing information and just regurgitating it in exams.....not knowing what it actually means. Most (again...) of them are good in studies and thats about it! I have met people who I consider truly all rounders...they are smart in all aspects. They may not be THE top ranker but they end up doing very well in life. Those, I believe, are the true toppers and deserve all the good things in life that they worked so hard for!
Cheers to all of you out there! :)

Funny
I have a lot of free time on my hands. What do I do with it??? I do things that people with jobs and real work dont do...I check out youtube for funniest videos that I can find.
I came across this clip from the show "The Soup" that airs in the US (that show is a must see!)
I have attached the original American Express commercial featuring Beyonce....and then you will find the soup's version of the commercial.....FUNNYYYYY! Check it out :D

To take or not to take!
So what happens when you mix a tortoise with......lets say, another tortoise?? Born are the dte people....! Gosh...its taking forever for the CAP rounds to finish and admissions into this year's Maharashtra MMS/MBA to be done.
Once upon a time, on Feb 17th the CET was held....wondering why it begins like a fairy tale?...oh yes, its a tale of time forgotten....but it aint no fairy tale.......! For me, the cet was better than expected...with a last minute decision (actually Jan7th) of taking the CET, few days of hard work and constant simCETs...I couldnt have done better (scored a 96.49%ile)..which is "decent". So you (and so would I) think that when the admissions process begins, you would be all set. But ofcourse how mistaken was I. Admissions began June end and even until now...the admissions arent done for most of us losers with now "crappy" 96%ile score!
I dont understand why couldnt the process be more like the CAT rounds, where in the colleges gets to decide whether to admit you. It would be more reasonable for the aspired college to decide whether I am good enough to be there. But never mind that!
Well, I gotta go....fill in my form for the next round beginning today....Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!

First time
This is my first time blogging. I thought about it for a long time before I finally started. Hmm...I know there is nothing to think about but seriously, never fancied the world reading my thoughts. I would hate to be near someone who could read minds. But then....wats the big deal..right?
Hmm....wat to say? wat to say??
